About Me

Hello and welcome to my ePortfolio! Thanks for scrolling down. Here, you will find a compilation of work from my first semester in the Sweetland Minor in Writing program at the University of Michigan. You can also scroll down for a link to sportscasting Demo Reel. But before you start exploring, here's a little bit about myself.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

My name is Jon Rubenstein and I am a senior majoring in Organizational Studies. I grew up with my three siblings in a small New Jersey suburb called Ho-Ho-Kus. It's the only double-hyphenated town in America, in case you were wondering. I graduated high school in 2014 from The Montclair Kimberley Academy.

Here at U-M, I spent two years working with the Men's Basketball team. I worked as a student manager, and also spent time as a walk-on practice player for the team (which you can read more about in my article "Ball Is Not Life"). Currently, I'm a Senior Fellow at The Barger Leadership Institute, a Co-Producer of a sports show at WOLV-TV, which is the student-run TV Station here on campus, and a crew member at Big Ten Network (BTN) Student U. I also coach a 5th-grade rec basketball team in Ann Arbor. According to one of my players, we're "a sick team at basketball" and we "have the best pre-game cheer in the league."

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF MY LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITING:

When I came here as a freshman, I considered myself a proficient writer, but not a passionate writer. In fact, I used to dread writing in high school. I viewed writing as mentally exhausting, frustrating, and often tedious. And I still view writing as all of those things! The difference is that since I've come to college, I've been writing about personally meaningful subjects. The satisfaction that comes with doing so makes it worth all the drudgery. You can read more about my motivations for writing by clicking on "Why I Write" at the top of the page.
